Imagine sand being lifted from a pile on the ground into the back of a
truck with a shovel. The load is located at the end of the
lever. The effort is exerted between the load and the fulcrum.
The effort expended is greater than the load, but the load is moved a
greater distance. In other words, effort is sacrificed in order to
gain distance. Another example is the human forearm. The
elbow is the fulcrum; the hand holds a weight. As the muscles move
the forearm upward, the weight is moved a considerable distance. |
