Listing of Heat Labs and their objective:

bullet

Energy Content of Food  -- students burn various food materials to determine the caloric value

bullet

Heat of Fusion  --  in this simple lab students will determine the amount of heat needed to melt ice cubes

bullet

Heat of Combustion of Candle Wax  --  this lab requires the student to measure the amount of heat released by a burning candle

bullet

Heat of Solution Reaction Lab  --  in this lab students will investigate exothermic and endothermic chemical reactions

bullet

Quantity of Heat Lab  -- this major lab has the student measure the specific heat of a metal, water, antifreeze, and a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water

bullet

Physical and Chemical Properties  -- this challenging lab has the student determine many chemical and physical properties of 6 white crystalline powders and then identify them from unknowns by using the data collected

bullet

Principle of Heat Exchange - coffee/cream problem  --  this lab problem has the students investigate a common problem in the work place (do I put my cream in now or later?)

bullet

Endothermic - Exothermic Chemical Reactions  --  this lab has the student perform two simple chemical reactions and measure the energy absorbed and released

bullet

Charles Law Lab -- students verify the gas law involving volume, pressure, and temperature

bullet

Mixing Hot and Cold Water  --- Students mix hot and cold water to find out exciting result

bullet

Viscosity Lab -- students determine the viscosity of Karo syrup
