PASSING

bullet

athletic position

bulletwide base - feet wider than shoulders (shoulders loose and ahead of knees)
bulletweight on balls of feet with heels on floor (for balance)
  1. knees flexed and in front of feet
  2. flex through ankles (knees ahead of feet, shoulders ahead of knees)
  3. near flat back - stress in thighs
  4. arms relaxed and hanging down,  head straight
bullet

arm movement

bulletarms together in one motion to pass (elbows together when hands go together)
  1. heels of hand pressed together (3 acceptable finger patterns)
  2. arms out in front of body
  3. pass off thighs (every ball if possible)
bullet

angle of elevation for free balls

bulletstroke ball in low position (lift arms through ball)
  1. faster ball = less stroke and less arm angle
  2. contact ball at same spot (angle of arms and bend in legs should be parallel)
  3. weight shift is back to front - back stays flat
bullet

angle of reflection for all other passes

bulletarms together in one motion in front of thighs at contact position

HIPS SQUARE TO SERVER/HITTER, PASSING PLATFORM ANGLED TO TARGET AS NEEDED.
NON-LINEAR ANGLES MUST BE ESTABLISHED EARLY.

bullet

MOVEMENT

bulletwithin 2 m of either side use slide steps (no pivot- this would lose your hips to server/hitter)
  1. backwards - LEFT FOOT FIRST- wide base, head level, don
  2. forward - LEFT FOOT FIRST
  3. if you must turn and run, extend and put arms together at point of impact (not sooner) and angle platform toward target  - keep going in direction you are already going (go where-ever your body takes you)
bullet

emergency moves

bulletknee drop - inside side of knee pad of inside leg drops - arms together when needed at best angle
bullethigh ball - replace chest with arms (in proper reflection angle)

Reminders:

bullet

knees ahead of feet, shoulders ahead of knees

bulletkeep feet straight - hips square to server/hitter
bulletarms together as unit at impact point and angled to target

SETTING

bullet

get under ball - athletic stance with right leg forward - all body parts square to target

bullethips behind you rather than under or in front - knees bent before contact
bulletbring hands up in one unit (elbows and fingers in correct position all the way up - hands extension of forearms)
bulletthumbs and forefingers are same distance apart (2 - 3 inches apart)
  1. do not cushion with elbows - use wrist to cushion as ball pushes wrist back (no palms up)
  2. on follow through push through ball (not over it)
  3. speed of follow through and legs determines how far you push out the set
  4. if arms were brought down from follow through position they would slap the front of your thighs

SPIKING

bullet

adjustments must be made behind the 3m (spike line) - once inside 3m line = full speed toward net

  1. weight on right foot (left foot can be behind or in front of right foot)
  2. first step with left foot (weight goes to left leg)
bullet

    3.   second step is a sideways step - step down when ball is in setter

  1. third long step almost at net - step to ball so it is at peak above right shoulder
  2. keep ball ahead of hitter - hitter must chase ball
  3. when starting third step- arms back (like wings)
  4. lift up - arms break at elbows
  5. feet slightly wider than knees
  6. when toes leave floor be ready to hit
  7. hips can torque (turn) into ball
  8. hitting options: off block, line, power inside block

BLOCKING

bullet

strong hands, strong, straight wrist

bulletlock fingers and spread at base
bulletextend arms so shoulders are beside ears - lock arms beside head (head locked inside)
  1. line up in front of net in a comfortable position - with some bend in arms - arms out in front of body
  2. angle in elbow goes to zero as you extend up and out
  3. feet - strive for balance and quickness - on balls of feet, slight knee bend - knees over toes
  4. step in direction you need to go - land on toes (not heels)  (outside blockers transitioning to outside need to cross step to get that foot away from middle blocker)
  5. may need to step - turn - hop to set-up
  6. arms never go outside body when in position - don't lean
  7. going to left or right - inside foot crosses over then hop (gets you out of way of middle blocker)
  8. outside blockers - left arm lines up on spiker
  9. arms lead block- do not let them drift back over head
  10. outside blocker talks - may need to push/fend off middle - holds arms out to catch and absorb middle coming
  11. outside blocker keeps outside foot slightly forward
  12. timing problems - if your are late you are not in ready position while ball is in play
  13. balance and movement - angle of arms = important to blocking

SERVING

bullet

both hips are toward target area

bulletweight on right foot and shift to left foot as toss is made

DEFENSE

bullet

low, wide position, arms bent at elbows

bulletneed good angle of reflection (quick platform)
bulletlead with outside shoulder - must step outside with direction step
  1. ball cannot go through you
  2. hips can then come around
  3. direction step stays straight
  4. if ball is tipped off block - low position you can run from - stay bent at you run

sounds easy, right!
